Comment. Logo #2 might somehow have issues with religious symbolism, but its layout implies directions that go both ways. I'd rule out anything that resembles naval insignia (compass) or NATO, chess, arrows in only one direction, and fists.
Logo #4 is in the process of being eaten up by Pacman. Logo #8 is like running in circles. Logo #9 is like a traffic sign, zigzagging away at speed. Logo #10 implies use of a firearm. The "head" of logo #12 is a nice mushroom (no-no), then again, its arrow layout and directions are nearly perfect. Logo #15... Greenland or Outback? The middle invokes imageery of a thermonuclear explosion. Logo #17 resembles an earthquake marker. -Mardus (talk) 23:47, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

[edit] SVG Seal of Puerto Rico needs some fixes

Request: Slashme did a wonderful job creating an SVG, however it still needs a couple tweaks to bring it up to snuff. The inscription was traced, it could use a proper redo in font. Also the flags on either side are configured wrong, and should be wavy. The cross on the staff the lamb is using to hold up the white banner should be re-configured to look like in the PNG as the religious symbolism from the coat of arms was removed by the Americans when they made the seal for Puerto Rico. The F and I and their crowns could use a nice redo, they're currently traced, and the white banner too please. The linked flag is also dependent on the seal. Fry1989 eh? 18:58, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s): I've had a go at some of the changes. I'm not sure what needs doing on the F, I and crowns, and the waving flag is beyond my capabilities, and I can't work out which extension on Inkscape creates that effect. However, the rest should hopefully be done. NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 18:37, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Well, the F, I and their crowns are just very choppy. It would be nice if they could be redone, they don't have to be font, just done a little nicer. The flags that should be wavy, that's not the only problem, they also need to be alternated, right now the two different flags that incorporate the design are side by side on top of each other. Fry1989 eh? 21:40, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Puerto Rico variant seals

Request: Above are three seals of the Puerto Rican government. However, there are several variants, which I would appreciate being made. The Governor's main seal is above, along with the first instance of a variant I have seen, but there are two more, this one and this one. There is also a version used Sila María Calderón when she was (to date) the only female Governor, and it uses "Gobernadora" instead of "Gobernador", as Spanish distinguishes male and female offices, but other than that, it's the same as the third variant. Along with the Secretary of State's seal, there is also a this older variant, as well as a seal of the Department of State. Please use the naming scheme I have set below. Thank you, Fry1989 eh? 01:25, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Coat of arms of Guinea

Request: Unfortunately, while the SVG is a very good trace, it still has issues. Could someone please redo it into a good SVG? Fry1989 eh? 21:51, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s): What are the issues? Be more specific.  :P I can see a few stray bits of colour, but I'm not sure if that's what you mean. NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 12:37, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Well for example, all the yellow is one big chunk, when it should be separate parts, the shield, the banner, the bird and olive branch. The part with the three colours of the flag should be independent, when it's actually all yellow with the red and green on top. Lastly, there should be transparency where the coat of arms ends. Fry1989 eh? 20:05, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
The SVG is a pretty good reflection of the image it was vectorized from. Anyway I mostly fixed transparency (the easy part). AnonMoos (talk) 10:40, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
Yes, but there is still alot of crap and layers in there that shouldn't be, but come with the territory of a direct trace. I tried to clean up what I can, but the file would still benefit from being made the way it was supposed to, with all the pieces and elements separate. Fry1989 eh? 21:46, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Perhelion -- Representing text with <text><tspan>...</tspan></text> simply does not give reliable or consistent good results on Wikipedia/Wikimedia, and I would not advise anybody to replace vector paths with <text><tspan>...</tspan></text> in a complicated graphic with a lot of text, considering the amount of effort and vigilance that's involved in making and keeping an ultra-simple graphic such as File:Simple inverse relationship chart.svg looking half-way decent... AnonMoos (talk) 04:29, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
AnonMoos -- I beg to differ! The new render version is a bit better in font displaying. You know that's depending on the font family. Penmanship is only conditionally required. -- πϵρήλιο 19:10, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Governor's Seals

Request: Alrighty, these should be the last Governor's seals to be made (except California's). First, we have the seal of the LT. Governor of Connecticut. Then we have the seal of Governor of Delaware. I must ask that instead of the Governor's name, you put "State of Delaware", so we don't have to constantly update it, or make new ones for new Governors . Please create two of this file, the one in the source, which is Ruth Ann Minner, and then one for the current governor Jack Markell. Next is the seal of the Governor of North Carolina (the image in this link adds "OBSM", I lost my image of the one without it, so please exclude "OBSM"). Next is the seal of the Governor of Ohio. Next is the seal of the Governor and LT. Goveror of Rhode Island. Next is the seal of the LT. Governor of South Carolina. Lastly, the seal of the Governor of Wyoming.

They should all be mostly straightforward, with all neccesary SVG elements provided above. As always, thank you. Fry1989 eh? 21:24, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s): For those that are greyed out or recoloured, would you prefer to have the original CoA colours included, or the colours that appear on the sources? For instance, should the RI Lt Governor's be coloured all blue, or should it be blue and yellow like the CoA? NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 16:54, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Delaware and Wyoming, I'd like in full colour, Rhode Island's LG might as well do it all blue like shown, South and North Carolina, you can do them grey-scale, and Ohio's is also monochrome, but I'd probably do it more of a light black like this rather then blue. Fry1989 eh? 19:49, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Comment: In regards to the Seal of the Governor of Delaware, I do not believe we should add something to the seal that does not belong there, even something as mundane as "State of Delaware". It could be left blank and easily explained away in the text supporting the image. Another option would be to use the Latin phrase "Nomen Nescio", meaning "name is needed here", rather than an actual name. Although, I would not think it too burdensome to simply create a new file for each new Governor as needed, as it would liekly be four to eight years before we need update the seal. Bellae artes (talk) 06:06, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

That issue was actually previously discussed on the talk page of the seal of the Governor of Utah. It's also gonna come up with California's gubernatorial seal, which also uses roman numerals for each governor. I don't think there's really any good way of going about this, but I also requested replacing the person's name with the name of the state on the seal of the Pennsylvania Auditor General, and when it comes to seals having names on them, I just think it's the best option. Fry1989 eh? 22:01, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
You mentioned that if an editor is not careful with the personalised seals he could end up placing the wrong numbered-or-named seal in an article,[1] but at least this would present to the public a actual seal recognised by the state. It would be disingeous and betray the trust of our readers to present an altered image and claim it as the official seal of a Governor when.

I suggest having a generic version with the personalised portion left blank, noting in the desription that the Governor's name or number was omitted in the image and that this information would best be presented to readers when the image is used in an article. Next, I suggest we create seperate and personalised versions for each Governor, or at least personalised files for the more current Governors and the and more historic ones. We could easily link each file together so an editor can clearly see his options and choose the accurate iamge. I would think it would help if we label these personalised files in a manner such as "Seal of the Governor of Delaware without name" and "Seal of Governor John Smith of Delaware" for further clarification. Bellae artes (talk) 08:10, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

What I have done on my article for all the governor's seals, is give reference links so everyone can see the real thing, and on the article for the Governor of Utah I created a paragraph about the seal, explaining the roman numerals and how therefore each governor has their "own seal". I'm fully open to having all the seals back to the first governor made, the problem is, we don't know when the governor's seals were first adopted, so they may only go back a few, or they may go back all the way to the beginning. The situation is particularly complicated for Massachusetts, where there is both a general seal (which I did request and has since been made on Commons), and a personal seal (so far, I have been able to find three, Governors Romney, Weld and Patrick). Assuming we do create them all the way back, or even part way back, I'll have to create individual articles for the governor's seals of California, Delaware, Massachusetts and Utah. While I'm not opposed to doing that, and I do think that having them all is ideal, it is alot of work and I'm not 100% sure if the benefits outweigh the negatives. If we do do that though, I would suggest the naming scheme be as follows: For all 4, leave the current file as "Seal of the Governor of state", and this file can be updated every time there's a new governor. Then for California and Utah (which both use roman numerals), once a new governor is in, upload the old version as "Seal fo the 16th Governor of" (where the number is variable). For Delaware, do the same, but upload the older version as "Seal of Governor name of Delaware". For Massachusetts, just upload the personal seals as "Personal seal of Governor name of Massachusetts". Fry1989 eh? 22:36, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
We seem to be in argeement then, a seal for each Governor. No need to create all the way back jsut yet, but only for those we do know about. Afterall, seals and such have changed overthe years and there is no need to invent some anachronism here. Asa side note, I think in the article covering the seals of the Governors you could get away with using the current one or simply adding an asterick and then explain the state affords a new seal for each newly elected Governor. This way, we can avoid so many seperate articles. But, that is more a Wikipedia issue and not something for Commons. Bellae artes (talk) 09:34, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, ya know, after thinking about it, I figure we might as well. I crossed out my request for changing the name to "State of Delaware", and asked for the one in the source (Ruth Ann Minner, the last governor) to be made, and then one for the current guy. Once all these requests are done, I'll start asking for the 3 personal seals of Massachusetts we know of, and for a few back on Utah's. California's gubernatorial seal is still a long way from being requested, because it's a complicated one, but in time, we can that done too. If you ever come across any more yourself, let me know :) Fry1989 eh? 20:02, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

I really don't think there are white or two different yellow colors. I've uploaded a better version in contour and form, but you have claimed the color and reverted. We don't know what are the right colors, or you have any reference? (the lower text is also not exactly positioned) If you want I upload a second version. Your drawing is much too diverse, small details that do not exist. The figure is smaller, the face looks completely different. It's no different stroke weights, etc... -- πϵρήλιο 14:39, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
Yes there are different colours, I sampled them directly from the original. I can only suggest that you calibrate your monitor if you are seeing such radically different colours. I don't know about you but I use a professional grade monitor which is manually calibrated every week (using an x-rite i1 Display 2 calibrator) as this is my trade. The colours you chose didn't come anywhere near the original colours. And yes, I used different stroke weights because the original does. For example the under arm strokes are thicker than the rest. Unlike a lot of people I manually trace so I know that the image is the same relative size (I enlarged the original before I traced) as the original. The text is aligned to the new circle, the soldier is aligned to the circle. I do know what I'm doing you know, but if you are so concerned that the image is off I suggest you upload your version as a new file and let the requester choose which he prefers. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 15:41, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
That has nothing to do with your professional monitor. This is a "photo" of a "printed pin", this yields at least twice a color distortion, also you can clearly see a blur. Ensure that you do it 20 years, you're not an expert. You know the properties of stylization? I do not think so. -- πϵρήλιο 10:14, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
I shall be sure to pass along your recommendation to my clients, but I somehow doubt it will affect their continued patronage. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 08:30, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Flag and coat of arms of en:Serbian Vojvodina from 1848-1849

Request: I have request for creation of two SVG images that would show flag and coat of arms of en:Serbian Vojvodina from 1848-1849: 1. the first image should be the flag and it should be made in accordance with this source: [2] (it is a Pančevo city museum web page: [3] - page is in Serbian, but translation of the description below the flag would be "flag of Serbian Vojvodina from 1848"), 2. the second image should be the coat of arms and it should be made in accordance with this source: [4] (it is linked from these pages: [5], [6] - the Serbian description there says "coat of arms of Serbian Vojvodina, 1848-1849). So, is there a possibility that somebody make these two free SVG images for Wikipedia? I am not good in work with software that creating SVG images, but I think that there is a possibility of automatic trace of lines in original image and creation of a new SVG image that would accurately represent the original image. [edit] Wikipedia logo in cheatsheets

PDFs
SVGs
PNGs

Request: The wikipedia logo within all these cheatsheets render the term वि in the extreme left of the wikiglobe incorrectly. Specifically, the ि should appear before व with the dotted circle being replaced by the latter. The correct rendering can be seen at File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-en.svg. Odder was kind enough to help me over IRC and try to fix File:Cheatsheet-en.svg, and it's png thumbnail renders correctly. But W3C validation (I'm not sure I did it right) seems to suggest that there may be errors which cause the svg to render incorrectly. (It seems to render incorrectly for me across three browsers and inkscape).

Also, the original reason which led me to find this error was the need to translate the cheatsheet into hi. I only know enough svg to translate text in it. I can't fix (or change) the logo. Would someone please upload a version of the en cheatsheet replacing the logo with the hi logo with a correct rendering? I'd then be able to translate the text and upload a new version. Thanks a lot.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 01:49, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

Note:File:Cheatsheet-en.svg seems to be rendering correctly (despite the validation errors). Also, most of the cheatsheets are probably using the old logos. Updating them to use the new svg globe should probably fix the problem.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 10:36, 15 April 2012 (UTC)
URL http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http:%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fe%2Fe3%2FCheatsheet-en.svg&ss=1 reveals no validation errors... AnonMoos (talk) 13:20, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s):
My observations are that in the SVG cheatsheets all the text is outlined so is no longer text editable. The other thing is that I couldn't get them to render properly in Illustrator. The globe in the cheatsheet wouldn't render at all even though the globe in the standalone V2 globe rendered perfectly. The PDFs (at least the English one anyway) seem to have been put together in InDesign so the text is editable in Illustrator, but whoever created it used a raster image for the globe.

All in all though I believe the problem is that the main bulk of the cheatsheet has been put together in Inkscape then the globe has been pasted into it. It's at this point I think things have gone wrong and Inkscape has created a non-conforming SVG (no doubt thanks to the Sodipodi code inside it. Considering all the problems I believe that the cheatsheet needs to be either created from scratch in Inkscape by someone who knows what they are doing, or in Illustrator 15.1 which creates much more standard code (and 50% of the size of the Inkscape code too). --Fred the Oyster (talk) 09:21, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

I don't think that whether a file opens in Adobe Illustrator is the arbiter of SVG correctness, and Adobe Illustrator can have its own problems of placing huge amounts of garbage in SVG files. However, try the latest version of File:Cheatsheet-en.svg. If there's a major problem with the file, it's that each separate letter is put into its own <tspan>...</tspan> element. By the way, the small Wikimedia logo at bottom left is an embedded raster image... AnonMoos (talk) 13:52, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
Versions of Illustrator prior to the current v15.1 did put an unnecessary amount of code in the SVG, especially if the file was tagged to remain editable in AI, but even so there's still nowhere near the amount of bloat that Inkscape creates. In any case, I wasn't using AI as the final arbiter of whether the file was coded correctly, I used the W3C validator. Having said that though, if an SVG can't be opened in AI, then there's going to be every likelihood that something is wrong with the file.
The fact remains though that these files would be better being re-done from scratch regardless of what software is being used. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 17:06, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
I'm sorry, but that's simply not the case. It's true that Inkscape can carry along a bunch of useless definitions of gradients and such from previous file versions if not purged, but Adobe Illustrator often overwhelms a tiny amount of code with a huge amount of useless garbage, as I've seen repeatedly over the last 5 years or more, from 2006 to 2012. I'm far from an enthusiastic defender of Inkscape (which has its own annoyances, such as "flowtext" nonsense), and I don't actually use Inkscape to edit SVG files (only to test and convert them), but when it comes to garbageflooding internal to an SVG file, Inkscape yields the crown to Adobe... AnonMoos (talk) 22:03, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
We shall have to agree to disagree then. Along with the fact that there isn't a single one SVG file created by Inkscape that I haven't been able to reduce in size up to 75% by the simple expedient of using Illustrator. I simply make sure that I don't tick the box requesting that I keep the file in Illustrator editable format, I keep the precision to 1 point and "use fewer tspan elements". I suppose it all comes down to how one uses the program, and after 20 years I feel I have a reasonably good idea on how to do that. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 08:25, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
If you can get Illustrator to emit lean and clean code, then that's great for you personally, but there's strong accumulated evidence that many others are not able to use the program as successfully... AnonMoos (talk) 03:19, 15 April 2012 (UTC)
For example, a case in point: File:MultinationalForce-IraqDUI.svg. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 11:04, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Request: I converted a PNG file to SVG, but it is embedded with raster graphics I am told and should be made with vector graphics. I am unfamiliar with SVG processes, could someone re-make it with vector graphics? The other files of this banner were created with the wrong proportions, and should be 5:4 like the file presented to you. I used File:Royal Arms of the Kingdom of Scotland.svg as my source. [edit] File:Goldbach-1000000.svg

Request: Probably because of the huge file size, this file does not render a thumbnail. Can someone rescale it or try regenerating the thumbnail? --Sreejith K (talk) 12:26, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s): I suggest that this is an inappropriate image for SVG. When there are several megabytes of elements, and none of them are language-specific, why not just take a screen shot of it at maximum resolution and use a PNG version? This should compress very well as a PNG, so you can use a very large screen and won't lose much fine detail. CLDunlap (talk) 20:10, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

If this image cannot be compressed to a size that is useful, lets do was you suggested. Can you please upload a PNG file with lesser than 12 MP resolution? --Sreejith K (talk) 10:41, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Graph needed from a spreadsheet

Request: I have a Excel spreadsheet of air pollution data in China that I want to have turned into a graph. I think the R programming language is quite a nice way of doing it? I can email the data or should I dump it somewhere on the web? -- Alan Liefting (talk) 00:19, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s):What type of graph? You can use the data in excel to create an excel graph which can be copied as an image and uploaded here. You can use SVGmaker to export the graph to SVG. Then you'll have to remove the watermarks that SVG maker puts(pretty easy in a text editor/inkscape). Best if you can upload the excel file somewhere.--Gauravjuvekar (talk) 10:24, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

Illustrator's graphing function can do exactly that, and relatively easily too. What sort of graph would be required? --Fred the Oyster (talk) 14:23, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
Even simpler would be to open the excel file with Libre Office and export the chart as SVG.--Gauravjuvekar (talk) 10:12, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
And horrible code it produces too. Not to mention the limited formatting and customisation too. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 11:18, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
Actually I just did some experimentation with LibreOffice (it's been a while since I've used it) and the results and the procedure are truly horrible. First off you have to create the graph, then you have to click inside the chart and do a Ctrl-A (if it lets you that is), then you have to copy and past the result into either Libre Draw or Inkscape. At which point you discover that (depending on which chart type you chose) what you have copied and pasted is actually a bitmap that has to be traced if you don't want the SVG to be an envelope containing a single raster graphic. So basically, not the simple solution you suggested. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 11:43, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

I would have hoped that Commons would have some sort of commonly used graphing methods in place by now. I suppose most stuff comes in as images rather than the raw data that I am presenting. Alan Liefting (talk) 01:31, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

Alas no, other than maybe encapsulated in a PDF (which is sort of frowned upon). If you let me know what sort of graph/chart you want and where I can download the spreadsheet from (email me the details if you don't want to make them public) and I will happily do what's required. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 21:04, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
Alan Liefting -- there are several graphing or quasi-graphing methods, but they're on the Wikipedias (where they're useful for presenting data in articles), not on Commons. See en:Help:EasyTimeline_syntax, en:Wikipedia:Graphs_and_charts, etc. -- AnonMoos (talk) 18:54, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Wrong translation in Administrative divisions of Germany

Request: The English version of the diagram is translated from an older version of the German one (probably this one) which still used the word "Ämter" where the new German version more correctly uses "Gemeindeverbände". This resulted in a bad translation "office" where "collective municipality" (as in en:Category:Collective municipalities in Germany) or "municipal association" as used in en:Template:Infobox German location is a more appropriate translation. Could someone please correct the English images? --S.K. (talk) 11:51, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s):
✓ Done And whilst I was at it I optimised the code (now roughly 75% smaller) and replaced the traced text with editable text. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 20:24, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for the speedy change! One more comment: The bottom left section still contains the text "Municipalities of an office/district". In the German version it was discussed, what to write there and since no good official name exists, the decision was to use simply "Gemeinde"/"municipality" and rely on the relative positioning in the diagram to convey the meaning. Thanks, --S.K. (talk) 06:40, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
I've made the changes, at least I changed it to what I think you meant, please let me know if I got it wrong. One thing I should point out though is that whoever created the image in the first place, rather than editing the original German SVG they used the PNG version and used autotrace on the heraldry and the text (which is why I replaced the traced text with editable text). This has resulted in some rather awful mini images of the heraldry. If I get some time at some point I'll replace the bad traces with the correct SVG images. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 10:18, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks again and apologies, since I wasn't clear. I think the text should simply be "municipalities", since all other boxes also use just the English names.
For background: This section stands for municipalities like all the others, but in German they are sometimes given more specific names to indicate they are member of a collective municipality. But the precise name given depends on the type of collective muncipality, so sometimes they are called "amtsangehörige Gemeinde", "Ortsgemeinde", "Verbandsangehörige Gemeinde", ..., but there exists no generic term for all of them. So just labeling the section "municiaplities" is the compromise agreed upon. Sorry for the additional work needed. Thanks, --S.K. (talk) 06:09, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
