Currently the following formats are allowed:
- Images: SVG, PNG, GIF, JPEG, TIFF (not for display purposes, see COM:FT#TIFF), XCF (GIMP)
- Audio: Ogg (using FLAC, Speex, or Vorbis codecs) (new software uses the .oga extension instead of .ogg for audio, although .ogg is still usable) or MIDI
- Video: Ogg using Theora codec (usually with Vorbis for the sound). (new software uses the .ogv extension instead of .ogg for video, although .ogg is still usable) - how to convert to Theora
- Animation: GIF, APNG.
- General: PDF and DjVu.

While SXW, SWC, SXD, and SXI (OpenOffice.org 1.x), as well as ODT, ODS, ODG, and ODP (OpenDocument) are theoretically permissible under the similar provisions to Commons:Scope#PDF_and_DjVu_formats these formats are currently disabled because we are currently unable to prevent people from hiding harmful or otherwise impermissible content inside OpenOffice's ZIP based container format.
