Hello, Billy Hathorn!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file ([[:File:GetAttachment.aspx_Gardner_in_a_wagon.jpg]]).

If you created the content yourself, enter {{own}} as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} or {{Cc-zero}} to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Obviously the author (you) and source (own work) is incorrect. Author is photographer, source is where this was published and who the copyright holder is or was. --Martin H. (talk) 21:32, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

[edit] File:Bonnie-McCarroll-thrown-fro.gif

There is much information written on the image itself, wasnt it described on the website you toke it from? Also a simple link to the source would be nice, please provide as much source information as possible, not as less. Aditional an info, "1915 work is not under copyright" is not true. Correct is: Works first published in the US before 1923 are now public domain. Unpublished works will be copyrighted for 120 years. This is however not a description of the image, its unrelated information. Please add a description as well. --Martin H. (talk) 17:17, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Your comment from the now redirect page - I moved the filename to an appropriate .jpg naming:
The picture was published in 1915 from the Pendleton Round-Up. Doesn't it qualify as public domain, being published before 1924? Th4e picture is also found on the website Oregon History Project.Billy Hathorn (talk) 17:36, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
Yes, it qualifies for PD, but not because it was created before 1923 as you initially said but because it was published before this date in the U.S.. The file was moved to File:Bonnie-McCarroll-thrown-fro.jpg, I amended source, license and author information according to information I found on the web. --Martin H. I inserted permission information from the newspaper where the picture is taken. Here it is again:

This is not a free license release, it does not permit modification, and probably not commercial use. This is why a permission e-mail has been deemed necessary, I guess. --Eusebius (talk) 13:23, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the OTRS-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:GetAttachment.aspx James and Mary Gardner.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Hi. Remember that for third party photo uploads by permission, the permission needs confirmation on file via OTRS. Thanks. Infrogmation (talk) 00:59, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

[edit] File:Ray R. Allen, Alexandria, LA.jpg

The previous image was deleted because it was missing a license tag. Files without a copyright tag will be deleted without notice, I therefore removed your description because it is not descriptive to the image. Additional: Remember that this is a free content project. The first upload stats, that the photo was provided by the Allen family for use in his newspaper obituary and on Wikipedia - thats not enough. Permission from the copyright holder must be given that the file can be reuse by anyone, anytime, for every purpose, in any media or in any format including modification, redustribution and commercial reuse under the terms of an irrevocable license allowing this kind of free reuse. See COM:PS#Required_licensing_terms. --Martin H. (talk) 15:08, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

[edit] File:James Gardner family in 1954.jpg

There is currently insufficient evidence to show that you were properly authorized to upload "File:James Gardner family in 1954.jpg" to the Commons. Can you please forward the e-mail from Sarah Hudson-Pierce to permissions-commons-at-wikimedia.org? Also, please note that the e-mail must clearly state that Hudson-Pierce is the copyright holder or authorized to speak on behalf of the copyright holder, and that she consents to the image being licensed under the CC-BY-SA-3.0 licence. Statements like "I give permission for use" or "the image can be used on Wikipedia" are insufficient. Thanks. — Cheers, JackLee talk 09:28, 10 December 2010 (UTC)

Mr. Gardner's publisher, Sarah Hudson-Pierce, sent the photo to me for use on Wikipedia. She has sent the permission in the past. Mr. Gardner is now deceased. I don't see what the issue is for this photo. 68.94.172.80 15:59, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
As I mentioned, there are two issues: (1) You need to forward Hudson-Pierce's permission to permissions-commons-at-wikimedia.org for verification. See "Commons:OTRS" for more information. (2) The permission must clearly state that the photograph has been licensed under the CC-BY-SA-3.0 licence that you applied to it. A statement like "I give permission for use" or "the photograph can be used on Wikipedia" is not adequate because photographs uploaded to the Commons must be usable for all purposes, not just for Wikipedia, including allowing other users to modify the photograph and to use it for commercial purposes. — Cheers, JackLee talk 16:04, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

This media may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Jack London bust in Shreveport, LA IMG 1405.JPG, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar.

Thank you!

Thank you.

[edit] Licensing / authors of files

Hello! I noticed you uploaded a huge variety of images taken at the National Portrait Gallery. According to your uploads, you painted each and every one of these images. I assume that's not correct and, that being the case, you can not be the copyright holder. Because you are taking a photo of a work of Art, it's not the same as just taking a photo of, say, a landscape or the like. You might consider this earlier file of, just for an example, Lucretia Mott. Your version of the image, seen here, should have the same information. I'd also recommend that you take some time to crop images more carefully and, perhaps, choose not to upload ones that are of low quality (or lower quality than versions of the same image which have already been uploaded). --Midnightdreary (talk) 22:27, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

I see you've started to make some changes, but not the most important one. Please, include the name of the artist of each portrait under the "author" section. It should not be your own name listed there. You'll also have to find the appropriate licensing info (I believe there's a template for faithful representations of 2D works of Art). [edit] National Portrait Gallery images

Hi Billy, I have had to nominate a number of your uploads of artworks from the National Portrait Gallery due to copyright violations. Any artwork created before 1923, at the museum, is free game for uploading to Commons. However, all artwork created after 1924 (unless possibly created for the Federal Art Project), cannot be uploaded to Commons. It can be uploaded via fair use tags on Wikipedia though. :) Thanks so much for trying to fill in fine art needs on Wikipedia! Missvain (talk) 14:07, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Scott Joplin, Garden City, KS, Museum IMG 5894.JPG

Hi there,

I notice that this has been misidentified as one of your photos and licensed as such. As it appears to be a straightforward reproduction of a much older photo, I don't believe the fact you rephotographed it allows you to treat it as a new work created by you, nor to license it as such.

I suspect as you claim it dates back to before 1923, it's public domain(?) but I'm not 100% sure of this so for present I've simply tagged it "wrong license" and altered the authorship information.

Any problems, please don't hesitate to contact me. Thanks, Ubcule (talk) 20:57, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Mr. Joplin died in 1917; so the photo is pre-1917. Billy Hathorn (talk) 18:09, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
No, sorry- that was badly phrased. I meant I wasn't 100% sure whether photos taken before 1923 were public domain. If they are, feel free to tag it as such and remove the boilerplate "wrong license". All the best, Ubcule (talk) 11:09, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

The licences for "File:GetAttachment.aspx Marcella Morris.jpg" and "File:GetAttachment.aspx W.H. and Mary Morris.jpg" appear to be wrong. You have indicated that they are your "own work", but the former photograph was taken "before 1920" and the latter "before 1900". It therefore appears that you obtained the photographs from some other source or sources. Could you please provide information about the sources so the copyright status of the photographs can be ascertained? Otherwise, the photographs may have to be deleted. If you need help, please leave a message here or at "Commons:Village pump/Copyright". Thanks. — Cheers, JackLee talk 17:27, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
Pre-1923, no copyright remains, public domain. Billy Hathorn (talk) 19:37, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for updating the file description pages to indicate that the source of the photographs was Sarah Hudson-Pierce. Since the copyright in the photographs is not owned by Hudson-Pierce, {{PD-self}} is not an appropriate licence as she is not releasing them into the public domain. I've used {{PD-1923}} instead. Thanks. — Cheers, JackLee talk 20:12, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

This media was probably deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Sugar cane exhibit at Louisiana State Exhibit Museum IMG 3352.JPG, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file ([[:File:Sugar cane exhibit at Louisiana State Exhibit Museum IMG 3352.JPG]]).

Thank you!

The reason given by the user who added this tag is : lacking source of original image (painting) depicted in this photo. Painter, date of publication and if possible original name of this work of art are required. --Lilyu (talk) 00:04, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

I am aware that you did take File:Salado, TX, Civic Center IMG 4058.JPG - But I wouldn't mind if the other angle of the general building and the specific TAPPS suite were also photographed

If you do it, please notify me when the photo(s) is/are uploaded

Thanks WhisperToMe (talk) 04:47, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

I may pass through Salado on May 15, 2012, and would be happy to take the photo. However, if it is cloudy, they usualy don't turn out too well. Where is the Sarah McClendon house there? Billy Hathorn (talk) 02:04, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Hello Billy Hathorn,

the following content you uploaded is not free and therefore has been or will soon be deleted:

File:Roy and Dale Rogers at Nat. Museum of Am. Hist. IMG 4774.JPG

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files which can be used for any purpose, including:

  • use in any work, regardless of content
  • creation of derivative works
  • commercial use
  • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload works you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.

You know better than this by now, or don't you? -- Infrogmation (talk) 15:55, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
