I like keeping discussions in one place, therefore I usually post my contributions on the page where a discussion started. I will answer on this discussion page if a question is asked here. Likewise, I am grateful if you reply to my contributions on other discussion pages there, not here. If there's something urgent, you might get a quicker reply if you use my discussion page at the German Wikipedia, I'm visiting Commons less frequently. Thanks, Gestumblindi.

Hello, Gestumblindi!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

[edit] Nomination for adminship

How would you feel if I nominated you for adminship? I've noticed there seems to be a growing backlog of copyvio nominations, and you seem pretty familiar with copyright law. I know I myself probably wouldn't like the added pressure (or maybe that's sour grapes; there's no way I'd pass anyways), so don't feel compelled to accept. I've decided to start stalking the deletion pages and ask questions, so if you don't want to, I'll undoubtedly find someone more people to ask. --Quintucket (talk) 01:41, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the confidence. But... Well, I'm an admin over in the German-language Wikipedia since February 2009; admin permissions would come in handy here, too. I would also be willing to lend a hand in dealing with the backlog; however, I'm not sure that people would see me as active enough here on Commons. In a recent unsuccessful admin nomination (Letartean) I read the comment "Letartean has 9,600 global edits, with only 1,445 on Commons, and 200 of those in the Commons: namespace. That's right on the edge for me -- we usually like to see 2,500+ Commons edits and a few more in the namespace." If this was "right on the edge", then it seems that I wouldn't pass, as I have not much more edits here than Letartean. So I suspect that nominating me currently wouldn't be a good idea. Gestumblindi (talk) 03:01, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
I looked over the RFAs (I was originally going to ask Takebeg, who has similar credentials to you, but on an unrelated RFA someone complained about his behavior, which made me think he might have problems passing unrelated to his credentials), and there are several administrators who are promoted with fewer edits than you have. I'll dig up the threads if you like.
Edits in the Commons namespace is meant to show one understands deletion policy, which it seems that you do. In Letartean's case the same user who complained about his edits also noted that his commons edits were on quality image candidates rather than deletion requests and copyvio issues, which aren't the case for you. QIC of course does not require admin tools, DRs do.
If you're willing to accept the nomination, I'd still like to nominate you. Given that we really do need admins and you have a respectable track record, I think the community would accept you. An if they don't it would be more a commentary on my judgment than your qualifications. --Quintucket (talk) 14:36, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
Well, if you think it's worth a try, be me guest and go ahead :-) - I'm not very eager, but I could and would use the privs, I think. Should the community not want me as an admin here, no problem. Gestumblindi (talk) 21:26, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
I have nominated you. You still have a chance to back out, you have you state your acceptance on the nom for the request to take effect. ;•) --Quintucket (talk) 23:24, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
