Batch Uploading of Mount Lemmon SkyCenter Images

Hi Jarekt, Thanks for responding to my request for help on the village pump. I have a copy of the .zip file containing the images here. Do you think you would be able to batch upload them? The author would be Adam Block/Mount Lemmon SkyCenter/University of Arizona. I'm not sure about the category, how about Images from the Mount Lemmon SkyCenter would that be ok? I am contacting you because your entry at Commons:GLAM#Participants indicates that you may be willing to help with mass uploads of media, which is what I am looking for.

I am Wikimedian in Residence on Open Science and working on facilitating the reuse of Open Access materials on Wikimedia projects. As such, I would like to explore the possibilities of systematic upload of suitably licensed Open Access materials - images and media onto Commons and potentially the full text onto Wikisource. Would that be of interest to you?

There are two components to that (addressing the backlog and updating frequently) and two major sources from where the files could be harvested (from individual publishers or from large Open Access repositories like PubMed Central).

If you see a way to get the ball rolling on either of these ends, I would be glad to discuss details. For a start, please see this discussion of bot support for Commons upload of image files from an Open Access publisher that already uploads them automatically to a MediaWiki installation, though not yet to Commons.

Where do we configure the header component for new articles in Creator: ns?

I have had a poke at MediaWiki:Newarticletext and cannot see that we have the components there to add the template preload component for the Creator. It is the cycle from 14 objects about World War 1, which is only in Perm Gallery, in one place. (I had an article about them ru:Аллегории Денисова-Уральского). Edit warring

There seems to be some kind of collaboration going on between two users, SupremeDeliciousness and Nableezy, who keep changing the data on pictures I upload and are using my contributions to the Commons to continue edit warring on subjects they are fighting about on Wikipedia. Can something be done to stop this? I see they have both been blocked on Commons before--Gilabrand (talk) 19:59, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

Anybody has rights to update other people image descriptions. If changes are not correct or are removing useful information than they should be reversed, if changes are malicious than they are considered vandalism and should be reversed and reported. However looking at edits by User:Supreme Deliciousness and user:Nableezy to your images, I do not see anything wrong with them. For example, in [2] there were 2 changes: category removal - which was fine, the image was overcategorized since once you have city level category Category:Gilo you do not need country level one Category:Places in Israel. The second change removing Israel from description of Gilo, also seems correct: according to wikipedia en:Gilo it is in the West Bank, not in Israel. I think all such images should be in subcategories of Category:Israeli settlements in the West Bank, but categorizing or describing them as being part of Israel will cause pointless edit warring. I am surprised that nobody requested file rename of File:Israel - Banias waterfalls 002.jpg and other similar files. --Jarekt (talk) 20:56, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

Handling various formats with {{NARA-image-full}}

Hi Jarek. I wonder if I could ask for some more template help? :-)

I've realized that my decision to use a "TIFF" parameter with yes/no options in the beginning wasn't a great idea. My reasoning was that I wanted to be able to easily identify the high-res master files of images, assuming that JPG versions and other derivates would end up in some of the same categories as the originals. Now I am systematically going through and uploading JPGs myself so end users don't have to. I think what I want to do is turn Category:Media contributed by the National Archives and Records Administration into a top-level category, rather than filling it with files, which would have subcategories like Category:High-resolution TIFF images contributed by the National Archives and Records Administration, Category:JPG images contributed by the National Archives and Records Administration, which would have the same files in different formats, and (later) similar categories for sound and video.

Right now, the template works by assuming anything not a TIFF is a JPG. It would be much neater if there were a "Format=" parameter, and I have bot simply input the file format there; that way it could also handle sound and video in the future, as well as DjVu/PDF or whatever else we might have. I can do that part easily enough. I thought a parser function might be able to make "TIFF=yes" equivalent to "Format=TIFF" and everything else ("TIFF=no" or that argument is missing) equivalent to "Format=JPG". I can clean it up with my bot using pywikipedia, but it will take a while to edit all the tens of thousands of pages, and there will be breakage in the meantime otherwise. I never liked the name of {{NARA-image-full}}. May be what we should do is to use this opportunity to rename it to {{NARA-information}}, {{NARA-record}}, or something similar. That way we can write the new template with "Format" but without "TIFF". Sure, it might take a while but I will get to it. The interwiki code (in automatic mode) only adds interwikis to pages that have at least one. I generally try to link en_wiki (or at least one with an article), but not necessarily all others.

I am afraid of hints, since I have seen a lot of pages where en wikipedia name matches commons name but the person is different. I am writing a python code that will try to match people categories with no interwiki links to several wikipedias by matching the name and date of birth or death. I do not know if Glamorous would be useful there, I tried but could not figure out how to use it for that purpose. One thing you can do is to use interwiki.py with hints. Yes, that would be most helpful.

For a general idea how glamorous can help here, try the link "Images from subcategories currently in use" on Category:Ship_categories_with_missing_year#Tools. It's a bit slow though. As I already used most results for that category, there wont be much left you could actually use there.

I developed a basic feature to retrieve information from articles on en. Thus identical titles at en_wiki, like the results at Commons:Bots/Work_requests/Archive_5#Categories_w.2Fo_interwikis probably wont render much. I tried to match, e.g. Category:Admiral Ushakov (ship, 1979) with "Admiral Ushakov (ship)", but this gives too many false positives. Maybe "Admiral Ushakov (1979)" gives better matches. One of the reasons we use the naming convention for ship categories is that titles elsewhere don't work that well on our scale. --  Docu  at 04:46, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

Tanja, Dostałaś wiadomość of bota bo twoje pliki maja szablon {{Uncategorized}} albo {{Unc}} który sama dodałaś. Poszukaj {{subst:Unc}} w opisach twoich plików. Możesz wyrzucić ten szablon. Także muszę cie ostrzec ze wiele z twoich plików przypuszczalnie zostanie wyrzucone z Commons. Na przykład File:Beataflorida.jpg: ożywasz {{PD-old}} bez podania autora ani daty jego śmierci. Zaoszczędzisz dożo pracy sobie i innym jeśli będziesz przesyłać pliki tylko znanych autorów jeśli twierdzisz ze zmarli przed 1941 rokiem. Najlepiej jak dodasz "Creator template" do każdego pliku który ożywa {{PD-old}}. Fakt ze inne wikipedie nie wyrzuciły jeszcze tych plików, nie znaczy ze są bezpieczne na Commons. I deleted the Template:Babel/header and Template:Babel/footer templates after modifying part of Template:Babel that call them. I do not think anybody else called them directly, (or at least should not have). I looked at some pages that supposelly transclude the template, like User:Vlaascho but for life of me I can not find anything that calls it. I think it is a case of database not updating their links yet. I will try to run a bot to replace {{tl|Babel) with preferred {{#babel:...}} where possible, that should fix it for most pages. --Jarekt (talk) 01:09, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

Błędy w plikach

Witaj. Przeglądam ostatnio duże kategorie plików na potrzeby plWiktionary. Zauważyłem przy okazji błędy w kilkudziesięciu grafikach. Błąd polega na tym, że miniaturze zdjęcie wygląda na nieprawidłowo obrócone. Po powiększeniu okazuje się, że fotka jest obrócona, ale proporcje są nieprawidłowe. Co z tym robić? Gdzie to zgłaszać? Jest tego sporo. Na dodatek automat do obracania fotek działa nieprawidłowo – co innego widać na stronie obrazka, a co innego na podglądzie przy zgłaszaniu do obracania. Jest to związane z bugzilla:6672 gdzie wprowadzono kod który obraca pliki na podstawie danych EXIF. Jednak to jest jakiś nowy problem i nie wiem co tu się dzieje, ale popytam się i zreperuje. User:Saibo głownie się pyta dlaczego prosisz o obrót w złą stronę, ale w wypadku File:Catedrala Ortodoxă Cluj 10.jpg nie jestem pewien jak to zreperować. Jak chcesz obrócić jakąś grafikę to ożywaj linka "Obróć grafikę", to ci pokaże jak grafika będzie wyglądała po obrocie. Witaj. Błędów ciąg dalszy. Zobacz tutaj: [3]. Fotka powinna być obrócona o +90°. Tak też zaznaczono w formularzu, jednak na podglądzie pojawia się miniatura, jakby obraz miał być obrócony o 180°. To jest przykład tego, że program źle pokazuje to, jak bedzie wyglądała grafika po obrocie. Ten mechanizm szwankuje. Z tego co wiem, to wnioski w Bugzilli potrafią leżeć nierozpatrzone całymi latami. Może lepiej napisać do autora tego oprogramowania?

Correct names

Lamentation

The above file, and any others that have been uploaded should not be uploaded as the works of Giotto di Bondone. They were all attributed to him in the 19th century, for want of a better name to stick on them, and the attribution has stuck. It is certain that none (or at the best very few) of the works in the upper church are by him. Most current art historians believe that they were done by a team of artists from Rome. However most older books have never corrected this. And the web Gallery of art and other online sources list them as Giotto's work.

The best name to put on them is "Upper Church St Francis of Assisi" or something similar. There are some Giotto's in the Lower Church at Assisi.

Special:Contributions/Obrazek — seeking an opinon

Just seeking another opinion on what to do with the uploads of Obrazek (talk · contribs), and I found the pages when looking at cleanup for the pages for the redlinked [[Template:Album Ceskoslovenska armada na hrade Palanok]]. They have some issues around the template, broken {{information}}, however, the issues go deeper, as the images are not their own and adequately sourced, there has been a deletion discussion for one of the images with a kept decision though not a thorough discussion, and no clear copyright, nor indication otherwise published, and no guidance at Commons:Copyright tags. JarektBot category organisation

Hi, I see that your JarektBot is doing a good job on interwikis. As there is no consensus on the order, I would prefer however that it does not put systematically the categories on top of the categories and the interwikis on the bottom. I am just running m:Pywikipediabot/interwiki.py after being annoyed about how often our interwiki links are out of date or point to non existing pages. The interwiki.py is a huge code which does not have that many customization parameters. As a result I ndo not have any choice about the position of categories and interwiki links. I documented somewhere between 10 and 20000 categories with text and IWs from sumitup. I gain significant time by having the categories at the bottom, and for maintenance of well documented categories, it is much faster if the categories are at the bottom. That the bot changes such layout is not a real drama, but I noticed that some people take a pleasure in applying rules and protesting. I saw hundreds of categories changed just to remove a white space or to change the order in the hundreds of disambiguation pages I made. self.interwiki_putfirst seem to control the order of interwiki links (alphabetical order on language code, language name or something else) not the order of interwikis before or after categories. Commons:Tools/pywiki file description cleanup seems to be no longer needed: it is part of the pywikipediabot code. cosmetic_changes.py for commons cosmetic changes seem to focus on changes fo files not categories, so it is not particularly relevant. I looked in pywikipedia\families\commons_family.py, a single file with all the settings specific to commons, and it seems that you can pick interwiki before categories or categories before interwikis, but there does not seem an option for neither, I guess because bot needs to know where to add new interwikis. I looked through the code of the standard pywikipediabot infrastructure and asked around on related mail list, and it seems like there is no easy solution to this problem. The problem is with one of the most fundamental functions of the code: wikipedia.replaceLanguageLinks which is used by interwiki.py (which I am using) and couple dozen other utilities. Apparently when any bot using pywikipediabot infrastructure adds an interwiki or category than it performs the task by first removing all interwikis or categories and then inserting new block in the proper location. The net result is that the process the page code is always kept in the same order with categories and interwikis kept together and in proper location. Each project using the infrastructure can customize the settings to encoding if categories and interwikis are kept on top or the bottom of the page, if they are all in one line or one per line, and if categories are on top of interwikis or the other way around. Commons is currently customized to use the same order as Wikipedia: categories and interwikis are on the bottom, one per line with categories on top. That is the order currently enforced by all the bots using pywikipediabot infrastructure.

I can change the code to request interwikis to be placed above categories (Wikia's preferred style), but such change will affect only my bot's edits and if it is in conflict with all the other bots using pywikipediabot infrastructure - it will lead to a lot of changes. We can also request code change to pywikipediabot infrastructure which will eventually affect all the derived bots, but that would require consensus. I can also stop adding interwikis, (I have plenty of other interesting tasks on my to do list), however that would not solve much since most other bots, using pywikipediabot infrastructure will have the same effect of standardizing pages they are working on, even when they are working on different problems. And most bots out there are either AWB based and perform mostly simple find and replace tasks or use pywikipediabot infrastructure. Sailko, I got dissatisfied with that list and implemented something that works better. Category:Institution template stubs without home category holds institution stubs that have categoreies that were not matched with the categories yet. The way I usually work with them is to click in an institution that will give you a page with pretyped search box. I usually search categories, institutions and galleries for the matching name. If I do not find any hits than I shorten the name. If I find a matching category I add category redirect, and if not than I create the category and add it to the Commons category structure. --Jarekt (talk) 02:03, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

Docu, By others I meant all the other people really confused by that discussion. I usually reserve HIDDENCAT for maintenance categories added by template. Also most HIDDEN categories should not be counted if trying to identify uncategorized pages. In Category_talk:Ships_by_name#Poll_on_the_visibility_of_this_category_on_subcategories, Category_talk:Ships_by_name#Hiddencat and many other discussions over the years, you seem be the main driving force to add HIDDENCAT to categories which I do not think should be hidden. If not for any other reason, because it confuses people. By "others" I meant User:Rd232 here and user:Trycatch on Category:People by name who was having the same discussion. To me those should be flat non-hidden categories. By the way, thanks for your efforts to keep those categories FLAT, at least on that front we can definitely join forces. You had already mentioned Rd232, so I suppose you just agree with Foroa and Stunteltje who seem to favor the carriage return before the category name. I think I missed the discussion about "carriage return before the category name", so I have no opinion on that topic. I also understand and agree that in this case hidden category still remains visible. Yes, it is relatively easy to use at Commons with some tweaks. User:Inductiveload/addVIAFdata.js contains the code ready for Commons. It could do with a bit of test-driving to make sure things like finding existing templates and adding templates to pages work as expected. I've made a few test edits and it seems OK. Collapsing Flickr data

Hi,

Quite a few of my past uploads have Flickr data of the type your bot is currently collapsing (e.g. File:Lusitania 1907 2.jpg‎). Is there a general consensus about tucking information into collapsed boxes that you can point me to? The Wikipedia consensus is to avoid doing this due to potentially unpredictable display problems in different browsers or mobile devices. If there is a consensus I could build it into the script I use for reviewing Flickr images.

I was responding to this request. I was under impression that collapsible templates are a standard on Commons: there are 456k uses of collapsible Category:Creator templates and 277k uses of collapsible Category:Institution templates. We do not have much complains about their collapsibility. I was only running on "Ruslan" files removing author, moving date and hiding the flickr metadata. I agree that we should not delete this metadata, but I was hiding it since it is mostly irrelevant. I Will look into it again. I did remove bunch of {{Check categories}} in the past, but it is still quite a manual process:

• use AWB to collect all the categories and {{Check categories}} from all Category:Images from NOAA
• Put it in the spreadsheet
• find files with {{Check categories}} and 2-3 non-nonsense categories
• use AWB to remove {{Check categories}} from that list.

Great, I think that should be part of existing Commons:Localization (Which I have never seen before) or Commons:Template i18n pages. We should review and update those pages and add basic info about translatewiki. I think your page should be a sub-page of one of those pages linked from both. Problem with your edit in Template:Other date

Walters manuscript W.659

Jarekt - really we need more explanatory category names than this. Not sure what it should be in this case. I am using the style Category:Khamsa of Amir Khusraw (Walters MS 624) or (not entirely consistently) Category:Piri Reis, Kitab-ı Bahriye, Walters MS 658. I was trying to come up with a better name but no name is mentioned in the files and authors name is so long, it is hard to use. Btw, when a specific MS category is created, the files should be removed from the parents (a lengthy job!) - these 2,000+ categories are much too big for convenient use. We could use some bot to fix overcategorization withing some specific category. Otherwise it is a time consuming task which is not made much easier with any of the categorization tools like Cat-a-lot, etc. I was using AutoWikiBrouwser in bot mode to do some of those. Category:Japanese Armour in the Walters Art Museum

Jarekt, what a great addition to Wiki commons, some great images but only a few of the images are actually of Japanese armour, most of the images are actually Japanese sword fittings (tosogu). Would it be possible to leave the armour images in the category and transfer the other images to a more appropriately named category such as "Category:Tosogu (Japanese sword fittings) in the Walters Art Museum" or something along that line? I have no idea how to move so many images, if you do please let me know, I would be glad to help if I can so that these images will be easier to find by interested parties. Feel free to categorize those images further by adding proper categories identifying parts, etc. for those I would not use categories with "Walters Art Museum" in the name. Replacing artists with question marks

We probably shouldn't replace artists that have question marks after them, as the Creator templates don't allow any text after them, so the rendering looks odd: [5]. I also wouldn't suggest changing the rendering behavior of the Creator template since many entries that have multiple artists depend on the current line wrapping behavior. Bot problem

I added the link because I am about to finish and publish the article. Perhaps it is wrong, and I should have done it the other way around. Category:Climbers from Iran

In all other sports, you put an image under "sportpeople by country" only if you know the name, and the man/woman has some rilevance. E.g. see Category:Tennis players from the United States. City of Boston Archives images

Hi Jarek. I'm working on an upload of a small collection from the City of Boston Archives. It's the images from this collection. Right now, I am trying to mock up a sample image description page to show them, but I'm a little lost with the templates. I made the partnership template at User:Dominic/Sandbox (it all outputs right in English, though it might not all be correct). I tried using Template:Artwork for the image information, but it seems to lack some fields, like location (of the photo's subject, rather than the document) and the record ID. You can see all the information I wanted to include for the first image in [9], but much of that doesn't show up right, and I'm not sure how best to do it. Can you help me out? Oh, this is great. These seemed like basic enough needs that the general template should be able to handle them, but this works as well. Thanks! Can you change "accession number" to "collection ID", since that is what it is? I tried and failed. And is there a way to put in a "collection" parameter for the collection's name? Also, I wasn't planning on including the Flickr links, since they just repeat the information from the cityofboston.gov source, and the files are inferior (or will be, when we get the masters!). An empty "Source" row still shows up when I leave that field blank, though; can it not do that? I uploaded the sample I'll show them at File:Abrahams, Henry School (Exterior).jpg (with OTRS pending so no one deletes it in the meantime). Dominic (talk) 04:37, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

• I added "collection ID" as an alternative name for "accession number". I can also change field "accession number" to "collection ID", however I was trying to keep changes to {{Artwork}} to a minimum. To me they both sound fine, but "accession number" has advantage of being translated to many languages and standard in all other files using {{Artwork}}
• I added collection's name. Is it OK now.
• I moved User:Dominic/Sandbox to {{City of Boston Archives partnership}} and in the File:Abrahams, Henry School (Exterior).jpg moved {{City of Boston Archives partnership}} to the source field. I think all files need some info in the source field and if we are not going to have a link to some URL than lets at least say where we got them from.

An accession number actually refers to something different than the library's or archives' classification scheme. You can have items in the same collection that were accessioned from different acquisitions years apart. This isn't too important, but I didn't want it to look wrong to an archivist. In any case, I hadn't thought about the fact that the source field is required, and I actually think the best solution is to just put the collection name, ID, and box/folder information all in the source field, without a named row for accession/collection number anymore. I tried doing it, but I could only get it to put that in the "Source/Photographer" field. After that, though, and putting the partnership banner back, I think everything's perfect. I've imported 5 files like this one File:Coypel Athalie interroge Joas.jpg. I don't understand why you are changed the licence in PD-old-100 instead of PD-old-70. Because in France it's 70 years after the dead of the autor. Could you explain me this changement ?

Author died more than 70 years ago and the change from PD-old to PD-old-100 just says that users in countries that do use 100 years after authors death, can use it too. If you have choice between PD-old-70 and PD-old-100 than PD-old-100 is always better. --Jarekt (talk) 19:18, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

I doubt if this mass update of license information was correct. Now the actual reason why the image is free under the jurisdiction of origin is just missing. PD-old-100 might have been added additonally. I will be working on Walters images for a long while, but I think we can squeeze Bundesarchiv revamp. Let me look at the proposed template some than lets change an image or two and ask people for opinion, probably at VP and project talk page. Than I can start changing. Hmm it seems that relations between Commoners and the archives were not always that easy. I had left a message about possible changes on the current template talk page (no reply) and forgot about Commons:Bundesarchiv. Some changes were made since I discussed the template with the Archive, but that should not radically changes things. Anyhow we can still touch up the layout afterwards. I guess you can have a try on a few dozen pages, and then ask for opinions on the project page.
