Hello, Yann!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

[edit] Crafts Museum text

Dear Yann, I am grateful for the wonderful photos you clicked of the Crafts Museum. I hope to see more in the future. We are still in the process of filing an OTRS ticket but here is the possible text you could use: "This image is a part of the GLAM collaboration between the Crafts Museum, New Delhi and Wikimedia community in India. Under this collaboration the Crafts Museum, New Delhi has permitted photography and release of its images under CC-BY-SA 3.0 and/or other free licenses in the public domain." Merci beaucoup, Yann :) A bientot! Noopur28 (talk) 11:24, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Combat de cornes dans les coins

Salut.
Merci, tu as l'œil !

--Jebulon (talk) 14:19, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Issue fixed on Commons Archive

Hi Yann, just wanted to let you know I fixed the issue that was preventing your additional SR2 uploads on Commons Archive (in the end I just disabled TIFFHandler, which is not fond of almost-TIFF formats like SR2). Please feel free to upload a few more files - I've been uploading some more NEFs. I also moved from S3 storage to EBS storage and did other performance tuning, which should make it much more responsive. Dcoetzee (talk) 17:34, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Images from Digitalt Museum, Norway

You have tagged one of my uploads with missing permission. The file has a link to the source, where the license is stated (cc-by-sa-3.0). The museum has a page where they inform more about licensing, see [1]. I have removed the missing permission-tag, but if you think there still are some problems with the image, I suggest you nominate it for deletion (which would affect most of the images in Category:Media from the collection of Oslo Museum and Category:Images from Digitalt Museum, Norway). Best regards - 4ing (talk) 13:59, 26 April 2012 (UTC).

[edit] FP candidate File:Durga, Burdwan, 2011.JPG

Does this FP candidate Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Durga, Burdwan, 2011.JPG violates copyright on commons? Please see discussion on its nomination page. There are so many images of durga idol there in commons for many years. This is a QI and VI. I am asking you because you have supported the image for FP. You also supported the image for becoming QI and you are an administrator on commons. What is your thought about this? Thanks in advance. -- Joydeep (talk) 16:02, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] camera quality

Hi Yann, thanks for the feedback re the bracelet. That particular image was heavily cropped, in poor light (indoors in a museum that didn't allow flash) and without using the tripod. File:Vani belt (inside view of stag).JPG is a photo taken with the same camera in the same lighting but uncropped, and File:Lady with Pearl.JPG is an uncropped photo taken outdoors with the same camera - probably with the tripod. Do you think it would be technically possible to take a quality image with that camera? Jonathan Cardy (talk) 16:40, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

I think it is difficult. Images from cheap cameras have a lot of noise, and are not sharp. There are suitable for Web uses, but the quality is too low for QI. You can still get valued images with your camera as the quality standard is much lower. Regards, Yann (talk) 16:45, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Eiffel tower and the seine at night.jpg

Hi Yann. Can you tell me what you mean by "no copyright on ordinary light"? I can't understand this phrasing. Tomer T (talk) 20:04, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

There can't be a copyright on simple lightning. See Platonides' comment. Plus in this case, it is a general view, which means that an unavoidable copyrighted element in a larger view is allowed. The Place des Terreaux court case: Commons:De minimis#An example under Civil Law, [2]. Regards, Yann (talk) 04:06, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] copyright of my pictures

Hi! I'm very confused about all the messages I have just read. I haven't noticed all these copyright infringment before today, and I'm sorry about that. I have uploaded several files since a few days, and I had never seen any message. These pictures are the property of the company in which I currently work. What should I change in the pictures' description to fix this problem?

Nightmare31 (talk) 14:00, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Bonne continuation ! Nightmare31 (talk) 12:49, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] File:Taj Mahal, Agra, India edit2.jpg

Yann, we received an OTRS email about this image. Apparently someone else has submitted it to a Qatar Airways contest as their own work although you have licensed the image as CC-BY-SA. The submission is at [3]. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 11:01, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

The email only informed us that the sender found the image on this link as a user submission. Apparently, Qatar airways gains copyright of all user submissions. Sender informed us that he sent a message to Qatar Airways saying that the image is not from the uploader, but rather one from a Wikipedia editor. I've informed the sender about this conversation. If you wish I can ask the sender to contact you directly using the "E-mail this user" function, but I'm not sure that the sender knows anything more either, he just happened to see it and recognized the image as one used on Wikipedia. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 17:06, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi, I opened Commons:Deletion requests/File:小倉優子.jpg; in retrospect, I probably should have speedied it as a copyvio; I'm not sure it would be appropriate for me to do that now, since I've already opened it as a deletion request. Since I see you've previously commented to the user about copyvios, I thought I'd bring it to your attention. TJRC (talk) 20:58, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

Yes, you could have speedied it as copyvio. It does not matter now, as I deleted it. Regards, Yann (talk) 21:04, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

A while back (almost a year!) you closed a deletion discussion on this picture and reverted to an older version. Bonjour Yann.
